“The Council is not happy that an apprentice was out of the castle after curfew, during such violence, but I have taken the blame for it. They believe I sent you out on an errand,” Darius said, tucking his apprentice into her bed, making sure her bondmate was right next to her, skin to skin.

Beryl watched in a daze as her Master moved around her room. She’d curled around Troche’s body until a healer forced her away as they spread through the area helping the injured. Rune huddled against her, shaking as the healers guided her to a bed in a nearby Inn. There she waited, wrapped in tears and blankets, until Darius came to collect her.

“It upset captain Marshal to find you had been in the market during the riot. He insisted on carrying you back to the Healer's Hall here at the castle. My dear, are you going to look at me?”

Beryl blinked up at him for a moment, “Troche died,” she said, her voice wavering.

“And Troche was your friend?” he asked, taking a seat next to her on the bed.

“Yes, he’s Master James’ apprentice,” she said clutching at Rune as he purred nearly inaudibly against her.

“Ah, I am sorry that you had to go through such a trial.”

“I’ve seen people die before, Darius. People died when they could not pay their debts after a card game or in brawls over a bad pair of dice,” she said with a sniff. “He jumped down and saved Rune. I couldn’t get to him, and he kept him safe. It’s my fault.”

“No child. It is not your fault.”

“But Darius,”

“No, you did not force him to save Rune. He made that choice. He put himself into a dangerous situation to keep your bondmate safe. You cannot cheapen his act of compassion and bravery by taking the blame for his injuries. You did not hold the knife, my dear, and you did not force him to jump.” Darius said, “I will speak with Master James and see if there will be a remembrance night for him. Do you know which god he followed?”

“Eshu, he was a follower of Eshu.”

“Eshu, god of the crossroads,” Darius said with a sigh, “Fitting for a young entrepreneur.” Darius smiled and stroked the young woman’s hair. “He will be cremated and his ashes spread on the road as Eshu demands. Master James will know how he would have wanted it done. Get some rest, child. I’ll have the servants bring you in some dinner.”

“Thank you, Darius,” Beryl said with a sigh, shifting down in bed so she could meet Rune’s eyes. The small cat butted his head against her forehead, starting up a soft purr.
